i wanna give you my ugly and my insecurities
the darkest parts of me that cradle my doubts and regrets
i wanna hurl past pains and not-so-nice nightmares
i wanna scream and shout my fears
and show you the real me--sans makeup
matter of fact, when i wake up
you should be there
crust and morning breath--i will share that with you because i want to be vulnerable
i need for you to see my imperfections
and still reach out for my hand and hold my heart
let's converse about cloudy days and traveling the wrong way down memory lane
my mistakes, you can have
my worries, you can have
my tear-stained face, i'll allow you to see
my bad habits, rude tongue and disturbing thoughts, you can have
i wanna show you my crazy and give you my insane

then came the phone interview.
then came the photo shoot with graham morrison.
it was hot outside and, apparently, so were the photos.

when i first saw the creations of fulani at folk jewelz, i needed answers, i needed to know how and why?! graphic, vibrant and powerful, understand that i am a fan! grateful she allowed access, a part of her follows.....
1) who is Tanisha? I am a star, a mother, an artist …shit I’m evolution………………. 2) what makes her smile?
I just gave birth to my young goddess Yemaya 4months ago, and she is a ball of light that continues to amaze me from sunrise to sunset. She helps me to be expressive creatively, with love in all things that I do….. and for that she keeps me smiling.
3) what is your creative process? (do you contemplate designs or does magic happen unintentionally?)
See, I don’t believe in things being “unintentional” …All things are written and happen as they should. Now I will admit-there are times when I have created something that was so powerful and divine in itself, that I didn’t even put two and two together until a later time…beautiful thing is, sometimes it takes for someone else to help me realize what has been manifested….and I thank my ancestorsfor this…….[quick story]- If you place A capital (F) and a lower case (j) together you will get the Folk Jewelz logo. I, later, realized it was the number five, which represents Power and Refinement…….. 4) regarding your jewelry, is anything off limits?
Folk Jewelz gives love and homage to the ancestors like Marvin Gaye, Huey P. Newton, 2pac Shakur, Malcolm X…to Afraka….to folks like you and me….any other foolishness is OFF LIMTS...lol
5) do you indulge in other art forms besides jewelry making? Fulani has created Life in 9months (this was most special to me)…from cooking to singing Yemaya asleep or designing digital artwork to sketching different ideas that come to mind…creation is a never ending journey….. 6) how long have you been creating jewelry?
As an artist you tap into many different art forms, and jewelry design was next for me…It was a little over a year ago, and I had become so tired of the bullshit jobs ---I felt these fools trying to crush my soul…I said fuck it, I’m tired of slaving everyday, and I’m certainly tired of the bullshit “trendy” jewelry that’s sold in these chain stores…I wanted to build something raw…something thatreflected growth, culture , creativity and wisdom…Well my passion for Folk Jewelz came right on time, because 2months later I found out I was pregnant. This was the perfect time for me to start building…
7) what sets your jewelry apart from others? (why should people purchase from you?)
I put a lot of love, time and brainwork into my jewelry creations… I don’t create duplicates, so all the jewelry you see are true Gems. They are precious and ingenious, created just for that special person. 8) what/who inspires you?
I do it for us….I do it for my daughter, I do it for Hip Hop, I do it for NTR, I do it for love, I do it for the ancestors that came before me.. I do it for The Kings and Queens who want to evolve in style and spirit…those who want to shine their true light…. .
9) what do you see when you first wake up in the morn?
I see light. Word up.
10) do your pieces tell a story or share a theme? if so, what?
Folk Jewelz shares both a story and a theme. Crafted on each piece are “vibrant” colors that hold their own meanings, or powerful inserts from artist like Outkast to black nationalist Marcus Garvey - “Progress is the attraction that moves humanity.” 11) where can your items be found?
Support me folks at www.folkjewelz.com !!!!! I am thankful for the blessings and love! Peace and growth!
Need Graphix ?!(Big sun Images.tumblr.com)
12) fill in the blank: creativity feels like freedom and love
at this moment, i'm sitting on my sister's futon, babysitting in ballantyne, contemplating my journey. you know, staring at where i've been, where i am and where i'm going.
i've seen love, tasted struggle, heard pain, smelt hunger and felt a little bit of everything along the way. i've cried cries, deliberately smiled at strangers and have laughed so erratically that i even tinkled on myself, a few times (shhhh don't tell anyone).
i've been held, thanked, comforted, loved, tickled, pardoned, blessed and saved. i've been diagnosed, abused, arrested, doubted, misguided and misdirected. Balanced and with blinds now open, I'm ready to shine like Sunday morning.....
The walls of my interior are painted the color of experience.....And, I like it just the way it is..... xoxoxo
You think you know? Trust me, you haven't a clue..... Shared to motivate. My life.May one inspirational story lead to another and another and another.....
